  • On Adolescence
    On Adolescence

Adolescence and adolescent states of mind have seldom captured so much attention publicly, nor have they stirred so much anxiety and disturbance privately. This long acknowledged, problematic, transitional world between childhood and adulthood is especially fraught, these days, with the assaults and pressures of contemporary culture and modern technology. The heart of the book lies in the exploration of the inner lives of these young people, whether or not they find their way to clinical services. It sets out to illuminate the sorts of things that go wrong, and how we can help to address them – the crises of identity, gender, loss, self-harm, bullying, depression, anger, suicidal impulses, anxiety, and so much more.On Adolescence: Inside Stories is intended for all those concerned with adolescence, and adolescent states of mind at whatever age or stage.

  • Relationships in Adolescence
    Relationships in Adolescence

Based on the study of a large number of young people ranging in age from eleven to seventeen, Relationships in Adolescence, originally published in 1974, proposes a new model of adolescent development, described as the ‘focal’ model, which makes a valuable contribution to the greater understanding of adolescence for all who have contact with this age group. The book contains an examination of three different approaches to adolescence, an outline of the research project, and a discussion of the empirical evidence concerning identity and self-image, heterosexual and parental relationships, and large group situations.Comparisons are made between age levels and between boys and girls with respect to the whole range of relationships, and the evidence illustrates significant and at times dramatic differences between groups.Of particular importance are some of the changes which occur with age, such as the degree of conflict with parents and attitudes to sexuality. Based on Dr Coleman’s findings is his fresh ‘focal’ model of adolescent development. This model stresses the elements of growth and change in adolescence, with special emphasis on the normal anxieties and conflicts that occur at different stages of the developmental period.Today it can be read and enjoyed in its historical context.

  • Disability in Adolescence
    Disability in Adolescence

For all the work on disability in previous years, there had been surprisingly little done on a subject of central importance – the social and psychological needs of teenagers with disabilities. Originally published in 1982, the purpose of this timely book was both to review the literature and to report an extensive study of the nature of the psychological problems, the quality of social life and the adequacy of the services available to a substantial group of teenagers with disabilities in the last years at school, with a follow-up study of half their number a year later. The authors show that many of these teenagers, including those with a mild disability, are often unhappy, worried and isolated from their peers. While the majority of the teenagers with disabilities, whether in ordinary or special schools, made friends at school, these friendships were rarely sustained outside. After leaving school the degree of social isolation is as great, and often worse.Among these teenagers the incidence of psychological problems was three to four times higher than for a control group, the most common being worry, depression, misery, fearfulness and lack of self-confidence and self-esteem.For the most part, the teenagers with disabilities were likely to be immature and ill-prepared to cope with adult life. These findings underline the need for a counselling service while the teenagers are still at school, and supporting services when they have left.Like other teenagers, those in this study were unprepared for the possibility of not having a job, and had not thought how to organize their lives if a job was not available or feasible. The authors draw attention to the large proportion of people with disabilities without occupation after leaving school, and the high dissatisfaction with day centres.Perhaps their most important finding is the need to rationalize the piecemeal and overlapping provision of help for school-leavers with disabilities. In the meantime, their book provides a wealth of information of direct use to those concerned with teenagers with disabilities and their families, whether in school provision, careers advice, work placement and alternatives to work, social services, counselling, medical services and further education. This book is a re-issue originally published in 1982.The language used is a reflection of its era and no offence is meant by the Publishers to any reader by this re-publication.

  • What is adolescence?

Adolescence is the transitional period between childhood and adulthood, typically occurring between the ages of 10 and 19. It is a time of significant physical, emotional, and cognitive development, as well as the exploration of one's identity and independence. Adolescents often experience changes in their relationships with peers, family, and authority figures, and may also begin to form their own values and beliefs. This stage of life is characterized by a search for autonomy and a growing sense of self-awareness.

  • Is it depression in adolescence?

Depression in adolescence is a common mental health issue that can manifest in various ways, such as persistent feelings of sadness, irritability, loss of interest in activities, changes in sleep or appetite, and difficulty concentrating. It is important to seek help from a mental health professional if these symptoms persist for an extended period of time and significantly impact daily functioning. Early intervention and support are crucial in managing depression in adolescence and promoting overall well-being.

  • Does a greater transition occur between childhood and adolescence or between adolescence and adulthood?

The transition between adolescence and adulthood is generally considered to be a greater transition than the one between childhood and adolescence. This is because the transition to adulthood involves more significant changes in terms of responsibilities, independence, and decision-making. Adolescents are also undergoing physical, emotional, and cognitive development during this time, which further contributes to the magnitude of the transition. Additionally, the transition to adulthood often involves major life events such as leaving home, starting a career, and forming long-term relationships, all of which have a significant impact on a person's identity and sense of self.
